Hungry, she bit into the cornbread and honey. It filled her mouth with its texture and sweetness, and her eyes closed involuntarily, as if she were a nursing infant. A memory of being held close to her mother’s breast flashed unexpectedly across her brain, like sun on sand, her heart washed suddenly with loving kindness. Distant thoughts cried like seabirds, up and up, seabirds being chased by a beached child. She knew: her mother was gone, like a gull climbing the wind.
