She sat on the bench as others walked past. With each person, she imagined their life. Each one of them surely had their own struggles–a house payment missed, a partner’s orgasm missed, the leaves falling crisply missed by a child of Manhattan. Nothing much that she could think of compared to her own struggles. And so, feeling the temporary warmth that passers by gave her, she pretended, for just a moment, to leave her own shoes behind and to just walk on. And for just that moment that they were out sight. And she knew, she really knew, at just that moment, that this was her last day on the wide Earth, and this is how she had decided to spend it in its entirety.
