The train

It was a simpler time. The boys giggling erupting into laughter that infected us all. Their little fingers sticky with the cotton candy I spent my last quarter to buy for them. The vender gave them that balloon out of pity. The train, gliding effortlessly on its predetermined course, escorted them to a better world. Our house gone, my job gone, all we had was each other. In this moment, that was all we really needed. It was the best day of their young lives and as I sat there watching them enjoy the day I knew I had to do something to change our course.
